It is with a heavy heart today that I share the loss of the real dog behind the Rosco the Rascal stories, our beloved and one-and-only Rugger. He died yesterday, and had just turned 9 years old last month.
He still behaved as youthfully as a puppy until the very end, really never experienced a tired, old age but for a few days, which, I guess is fitting. He was a forever energetic, playful, sweet, intelligent, rascally, mild-mannered, and oh so lovable fellow, just like Rosco in the books.
He went peacefully after a surprise rapid deterioration of multiple internal organs set in, and we are devastated. But his legend will live on as the dog that inspired me to dream up stories about him, and hopefully inspired so many children out there who’ve read about him to live life to the fullest everyday and always to have each other’s backs. And don’t worry, he still has many fictional adventures ahead of him and his book series will go on.
I feel incredibly lucky and ever so grateful that he was a part of our lives, and grateful that he could be a part of yours. He will be forever loved and incredibly missed, watching out for us all from Doggy Heaven.
