Q&A With Author W.B. Tyler

Author W.B. Tyler

Q. Welcome to Rosco’s Reading Room, Mr. Tyler! So, what kinds of children’s books do you write?

A. Thanks for having me here. I write picture books. The words and sentences are focused on Kindergartners who are beginning to read. I like to push the concepts towards older readers so that big sisters and brothers become engaged in the story line. But kids from preschool to 1st grade will enjoy it.

Q. So where did you grow up, and where do you live now?

A. Virtually my entire life I’ve lived in the suburbs of Manhattan, first in New York State and now Connecticut. If I Were Human reflects that perspective.

“…you have a story which will captivate every child who reads it…”

~Susan Keefe, author of Toby’s Tails

Q. I’m sure there’s plenty of inspiration to be found in such great places. So, why do you write what you write?

A. It brings me joy! I started writing books that were meant to be for my grandchildren. Then, when I gave copies away, I discovered all children loved the stories. Now I’m hooked on making kids laugh out loud.

Q. I think kids really appreciate finding humor in the books they read. Can you tell us more about your book?

A. If I Were Human is about a dog named Brina and her friends. They imagine what they would do if they were people. We tell the story with a series of silly pictures. For instance, a dog on a school bus and a squirrel chef. At the end of the story, Brina reflects on her life and decides that she prefers being a dog. There are quite a few inside jokes for big people.

Some adult readers have found meaning in the book. One wrote, “What a lovely, original new way to teach the lesson: be content with who you are.”

I am delighted that she felt that way, but I was just going for the laughs. 😉

By the way, Brina (BREE-nah) is from Slovenia and her name means Juniper.

Q. That’s a great concept. Were there any personal experiences behind the motivation for this book?

A. I’ve spent my life in a business environment. That world revolves around people doing silly things while taking themselves seriously.

So, I wrote a book about animals looking silly because they act like humans.

I don’t want to be a dog, but dogs represent fun and caring and beauty. In that way I think they have a wonderful life.

Q. I certainly agree, on all those points. So, what plans do you have for the future in terms of publishing?

A. I’ve written four other stories with the same characters, but they’re still works in progress. My favorite is one about the dogs trick-or-treating.

Q. Well, I can’t wait to read the new book, and I look forward to reading that future Halloween title as well. I wish you all the best with your book. Thanks for stopping by today!

A. My pleasure–thank you! ~W.B. Tyler
